Mīnākṣī, "the fish-eyed one", is the Goddess of Madurai in Tamil Nadu. Like a fish that never closes its eyes, she watches over her devotees without rest. She is shown green-complexioned, holding a parrot and a flower.

In the local tradition she was born as the warrior princess of the Pāṇḍya kingdom, conquered the world, and married Śiva, who came to Madurai as Sundareśvara. Their divine wedding, the Mīnākṣī Tirukalyāṇam, is the centre of the great Chithirai festival each spring, and the Mīnākṣī Amman temple is one of the largest temple complexes in India.
