1 / 9

Verse 1

namāmīśamīśāna nirvāṇarūpaṃvibhuṃ vyāpakaṃ brahmavedasvarūpam |nijaṃ nirguṇaṃ nirvikalpaṃ nirīhaṃcidākāśamākāśavāsaṃ bhaje'ham ||1||

I bow to the Lord, the ruler of all, whose very form is liberation; all-pervading, the embodiment of Brahman and the Veda. I worship Him who abides in His own nature, beyond qualities, beyond distinctions and desire, the sky of consciousness who dwells in space itself.

Verse 2

nirākāramoṅkāramūlaṃ turīyaṃgirājñānagotītamīśaṃ girīśam |karālaṃ mahākālakālaṃ kṛpālaṃguṇāgārasaṃsārapāraṃ nato'ham ||2||

Formless, the root of Oṃ, the fourth state beyond waking, dream and sleep; beyond speech, knowledge and the senses, the Lord of the mountain. Fearsome, the death of Death itself, yet compassionate; the abode of virtues who carries us across the world, to Him I bow.

Verse 3

tuṣārādrisaṃkāśagauraṃ gabhīraṃmanobhūtakoṭiprabhāśrīśarīram |sphuranmaulikallolinī cārugaṅgālasadbhālabālendu kaṇṭhe bhujaṅgā ||3||

Fair as the snowy mountain, profound, His radiant body outshines millions of gods of love. On His head the lovely Gaṅgā plays in waves, the young moon shines on His brow, and serpents adorn His throat.

Verse 4

calatkuṇḍalaṃ bhrūsunetraṃ viśālaṃprasannānanaṃ nīlakaṇṭhaṃ dayālam |mṛgādhīśacarmāmbaraṃ muṇḍamālaṃpriyaṃ śaṅkaraṃ sarvanāthaṃ bhajāmi ||4||

With swinging earrings, fine brows and large eyes, a serene face, a blue throat and a kind heart; clad in a lion’s skin and wearing a garland of skulls, the beloved Śaṅkara, Lord of all, I worship.

Verse 5

pracaṇḍaṃ prakṛṣṭaṃ pragalbhaṃ pareśaṃakhaṇḍaṃ ajaṃ bhānukoṭiprakāśam |trayaḥśūlanirmūlanaṃ śūlapāṇiṃbhaje'haṃ bhavānīpatiṃ bhāvagamyam ||5||

Fierce, supreme, mighty, the highest Lord; undivided, unborn, shining like millions of suns. Trident in hand, He uproots the threefold suffering. I worship the consort of Bhavānī, who is reached through devotion.

Verse 6

kalātītakalyāṇakalpāntakārīsadā sajjanānandadātā purārī |cidānandasandohamohāpahārīprasīda prasīda prabho manmathārī ||6||

Beyond all parts, auspicious, the one who ends the age; ever the giver of joy to the good, destroyer of the three cities; the fullness of consciousness and bliss who removes delusion. Be gracious, be gracious, O Lord, foe of Kāma.

Verse 7

na yāvad umānāthapādāravindaṃbhajantīha loke pare vā narāṇām |na tāvatsukhaṃ śāntisantāpanāśaṃprasīda prabho sarvabhūtādhivāsam ||7||

As long as people do not worship the lotus feet of Umā’s Lord, in this world or the next, they find no happiness, no peace, no end to suffering. Be gracious, O Lord who dwells in all beings.

Verse 8

na jānāmi yogaṃ japaṃ naiva pūjāṃnato'haṃ sadā sarvadā śambhu tubhyam |jarājanmaduḥkhaughatātapyamānaṃprabho pāhi āpannamāmīśa śambho ||8||

I know neither yoga, nor japa, nor worship; I simply bow to You always, O Śambhu. Protect me, O Lord, burning in the floods of sorrow of old age and birth; protect me in my distress, O Īśa, O Śambhu.

Verse 9

rudrāṣṭakamidaṃ proktaṃ vipreṇa haratoṣaye |ye paṭhanti narā bhaktyā teṣāṃ śambhuḥ prasīdati ||9||

This Rudrāṣṭaka was sung by a devotee to please Hara. Śambhu is pleased with those who recite it with devotion.
