Kanakadhara Stotram
kanakadhārāstotram
A 22-verse hymn to Goddess Lakshmi attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, said to have been composed to summon a shower of golden amalaka fruit ('kanaka-dhara', stream of gold) for a poor devotee. It dwells on the play of Lakshmi's compassionate sidelong glance upon Vishnu and Her grace towards the destitute.

aṅgaṃ hareḥ pulakabhūṣaṇamāśrayantī bhṛṅgāṅganeva mukulābharaṇaṃ tamālam |aṅgīkṛtākhilavibhūtirapāṅgalīlā māṅgalyadā'stu mama maṅgaladevatāyāḥ || 1||
Like a she-bee resting on a budded tamala tree, Her sidelong glance plays upon the thrilled, ornament-like body of Hari, embracing all splendour, may that auspicious glance of the Goddess of fortune grant me blessings.
Commentary
mugdhā muhurvidadhatī vadane murāreḥ prematrapāpraṇihitāni gatāgatāni |mālā dṛśormadhukarīva mahotpale yā sā me śriyaṃ diśatu sāgarasambhavāyāḥ || 2||
Charming, again and again She casts and withdraws Her glances upon Murari’s face with love mingled with modesty, like a row of bees over a great lotus. May that gaze of the ocean-born Lakshmi bestow prosperity on me.
Commentary
āmīlitākṣamadhigamya mudā mukundam– ānandakandamanimeṣamanaṅgatantram |ākekarasthitakanīnikapakṣmanetraṃ bhūtyai bhavenmama bhujaṅgaśayāṅganāyāḥ || 3||
Reaching with joy the half-closed eyes of Mukunda, root of bliss, unwinking, under Kama’s sway, Her lash-fringed sidelong gaze rests on Him. May the glance of Her who reclines beside the serpent-couched Lord be for my welfare.
Commentary
bāhvantare madhujitaḥ śritakaustubhe yā hārāvalīva harinīlamayī vibhāti |kāmapradā bhagavato'pi kaṭākṣamālā kalyāṇamāvahatu me kamalālayāyāḥ || 4||
On the chest of Madhu’s slayer, beside the Kaustubha gem, Her garland of glances shines sapphire-blue like a necklace, granting desires even to the Lord. May that boon-bestowing gaze of the lotus-dwelling Lakshmi bring me good fortune.
Commentary
kālāmbudālilalitorasi kaiṭābhārer– dhārādhare sphurati yā taḍidaṅganeva |mātuḥ samastajagatāṃ mahanīyamūrtir– bhadrāṇi me diśatu bhārgavanandanāyāḥ || 5||
On the dark-cloud chest of Kaitabha’s foe She gleams like a streak of lightning on a rain-cloud. May the blessings of that revered form, daughter of Bhrigu and Mother of all the worlds, be granted to me.
Commentary
prāptaṃ padaṃ prathamataḥ khalu yatprabhāvān– māṅgalyabhāji madhumāthini manmathena |mayyāpatettadiha mantharamīkṣaṇārdhaṃ mandālasaṃ ca makarālayakanyakāyāḥ || 6||
By whose grace Kama first won his place in the auspicious slayer of Madhu, may that slow, languid half-glance of the daughter of the milk-ocean fall upon me here.
Commentary
viśvāmarendrapadavibhramadānadakṣam– ānandaheturadhikaṃ muravidviṣo'pi |īṣanniṣīdatu mayi kṣaṇamīkṣaṇārdham– indīvarodarasahodaramindirāyāḥ || 7||
Skilled to grant even the dazzling throne of the king of the gods, a source of joy even to Vishnu, may that half-glance of Indira, sister to the heart of the blue lotus, rest on me but for a moment.
Commentary
iṣṭāviśiṣṭamatayo'pi yayā dayārdra– dṛṣṭyā triviṣṭapapadaṃ sulabhaṃ labhante |dṛṣṭiḥ prahṛṣṭakamalodaradīptiriṣṭāṃ puṣṭiṃ kṛṣīṣṭa mama puṣkaraviṣṭarāyāḥ || 8||
By whose compassion-moist gaze even the dull-witted easily attain the abode of heaven, may that bright, lotus-hearted gaze of Her seated on the lotus nurture in me the prosperity I desire.
Commentary

May the rain-cloud that is the eyes of Narayana’s beloved, driven by the gentle wind of compassion, pour a stream of wealth-water upon this poor, dejected fledgling bird, washing far away the long burden of evil deeds.
Commentary
