devi sureśvari bhagavati gaṅge tribhuvanatāriṇi taralataraṅge |śaṅkaramaulivihāriṇi vimale mama matirāstāṃ tava padakamale ||1||
O Goddess, queen of the gods, blessed Gaṅgā, who carries the three worlds across with your rippling waves; pure one who plays on Śaṅkara’s head: may my mind rest at your lotus feet.
bhāgīrathi sukhadāyini mātastava jalamahimā nigame khyātaḥ |nāhaṃ jāne tava mahimānaṃ pāhi kṛpāmayi māmajñānam ||2||
Bhāgīrathī, giver of joy, Mother, the greatness of your water is proclaimed in the Vedas. I do not know your greatness; protect me, ignorant as I am, O compassionate one.
haripadapādyataraṅgiṇi gaṅge himavidhumuktādhavalataraṅge |dūrīkuru mama duṣkṛtibhāraṃ kuru kṛpayā bhavasāgarapāram ||3||
Gaṅgā, river that washes Hari’s feet, whose waves are white as snow, moon and pearls: remove the burden of my misdeeds and in your mercy carry me across the ocean of becoming.
tava jalamamalaṃ yena nipītaṃ paramapadaṃ khalu tena gṛhītam |mātargaṅge tvayi yo bhaktaḥ kila taṃ draṣṭuṃ na yamaḥ śaktaḥ ||4||
Whoever has drunk your pure water has surely reached the highest state. Mother Gaṅgā, Yama, the lord of death, cannot even look at one who is devoted to you.
patitoddhāriṇi jāhnavi gaṅge khaṇḍitagirivaramaṇḍitabhaṅge |bhīṣmajanani he munivarakanye patitanivāriṇi tribhuvanadhanye ||5||
Jāhnavī, Gaṅgā, uplifter of the fallen, whose waves break against and adorn the great mountains; mother of Bhīṣma, daughter of the great sage (Jahnu); you who keep the fallen from falling, blessed in the three worlds.
kalpalatāmiva phaladāṃ loke praṇamati yastvāṃ na patati śoke |pārāvāravihāriṇi gaṅge vimukhayuvatikṛtataralāpāṅge ||6||
Whoever bows to you, who grant every wish like the wish-fulfilling creeper, never falls into sorrow. Gaṅgā, who flows to the ocean, whose glances are as lively as those of a young woman who turns her face away.
tava cenmātaḥ srotaḥsnātaḥ punarapi jaṭhare so'pi na jātaḥ |narakanivāriṇi jāhnavi gaṅge kaluṣavināśini mahimottuṅge ||7||
Mother, one who has bathed in your stream is not born again in a womb. Jāhnavī, Gaṅgā, who keeps us from hell, destroyer of impurity, lofty in greatness.
punarasadaṅge puṇyataraṅge jaya jaya jāhnavi karuṇāpāṅge |indramukuṭamaṇirājitacaraṇe sukhade śubhade bhṛtyaśaraṇye ||8||
You who purify, whose waves are holy: victory, victory to you, Jāhnavī, whose glance is compassion; whose feet shine with the jewels of Indra’s crown; giver of joy, giver of good, refuge of your servants.
rogaṃ śokaṃ tāpaṃ pāpaṃ hara me bhagavati kumatikalāpam |tribhuvanasāre vasudhāhāre tvamasi gatirmama khalu saṃsāre ||9||
Take away my disease, sorrow, pain and sin, blessed one, and all my wrong thinking. Essence of the three worlds, necklace of the earth, you are indeed my refuge in this world.
alakānande paramānande kuru karuṇāmayi kātaravandye |tava taṭanikaṭe yasya nivāsaḥ khalu vaikuṇṭhe tasya nivāsaḥ ||10||
Alakanandā, supreme bliss, show compassion, merciful one, worshipped by the distressed. Whoever lives near your banks surely lives in Vaikuṇṭha.
varamiha nīre kamaṭho mīnaḥ kiṃ vā tīre śaraṭaḥ kṣīṇaḥ |athavā śvapaco malino dīnastava na hi dūre nṛpatikulīnaḥ ||11||
Better to be a tortoise or a fish in your water, or a thin lizard on your bank, or even a poor, unclean outcaste near you, than a man of royal birth far away from you.
bho bhuvaneśvari puṇye dhanye devi dravamayi munivarakanye |gaṅgāstavamimamamalaṃ nityaṃ paṭhati naro yaḥ sa jayati satyam ||12||
O queen of the world, holy and blessed Goddess in liquid form, daughter of the great sage: whoever recites this pure hymn to Gaṅgā every day is truly victorious.
yeṣāṃ hṛdaye gaṅgābhaktisteṣāṃ bhavati sadā sukhamuktiḥ |madhurākāntāpajjhaṭikābhiḥ paramānandakalitalalitābhiḥ ||13||
Those in whose hearts there is devotion to Gaṅgā always gain happiness and liberation, through these sweet, graceful verses in the pajjhaṭikā metre, full of supreme bliss.
gaṅgāstotramidaṃ bhavasāraṃ vāñchitaphaladaṃ vimalaṃ sāram |śaṅkarasevakaśaṅkararacitaṃ paṭhati sukhī stava iti ca samāptaḥ ||14||
This hymn to Gaṅgā, the essence of existence, pure and precious, granting the fruit one desires, composed by Śaṅkara, the servant of Śaṅkara (Śiva): whoever reads it is happy. Thus the hymn ends.
