The supreme Vedic hymn to the Cosmic Being (Purusha), Rigveda 10.90, describing the whole universe as the body of the thousand-headed Purusha and the cosmic sacrifice from which creation, the Vedas, the social order and the worlds arose. In the recited Taittiriya form (identified with Narayana/Vishnu) it is followed by the uttara-narayana mantras and is central to abhisheka and every major puja.

oṃ sahasraśīrṣā puruṣaḥ |sahasrākṣaḥ sahasrapāt |sa bhūmiṃ viśvato vṛtvā |atyatiṣṭhaddaśāṅgulam || 1||
The Purusha (Cosmic Being) has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet. Enveloping the earth on every side, He yet extended ten finger-breadths beyond.

यह सब कुछ, जो हो चुका और जो होने वाला है, पुरुष ही है। वह अमरत्व का स्वामी है, और उस सबका भी जो अन्न के द्वारा बढ़ता है।

Such is His greatness, and the Purusha is even greater than this. All beings are a quarter of Him; three quarters of Him are the immortal in heaven.

इतनी उसकी महिमा है, और पुरुष इससे भी महान् है। समस्त प्राणी उसके एक चरण (चतुर्थांश) मात्र हैं; उसके तीन चरण द्युलोक में अमृत-रूप हैं।

तीन चरणों से पुरुष ऊर्ध्व (परे) उठ गया; उसका एक चरण पुनः यहाँ (इस जगत् में) प्रकट हुआ। फिर वह चेतन (खाने वाले) और अचेतन (न खाने वाले) सब ओर व्याप्त हो गया।

From Him was born the Virat (cosmic form), and from the Virat the Purusha (the indwelling soul). Once born, He extended beyond the earth, behind and before.

When the gods performed the sacrifice with the Purusha as the oblation, spring was its clarified butter, summer its fuel, and autumn its offering.

जब देवताओं ने पुरुष को हवि बनाकर यज्ञ किया, तब वसन्त उसका घृत बना, ग्रीष्म समिधा (ईंधन) और शरद् हविष्य (आहुति) बना।

Seven were the enclosing sticks of that sacrifice; thrice seven were the kindling faggots made, when the gods, performing the sacrifice, bound the Purusha as the victim.
