Shiva Tandava Stotram
śivatāṇḍavastotram
A vigorous hymn of sixteen verses with a concluding phalashruti, traditionally attributed to Ravana, extolling Shiva's cosmic Tandava dance. Its dense alliterative Sanskrit, set to a galloping metre, evokes the very rhythm of Shiva's drum; it is among the most powerful and beloved of all Shaiva stotras.

On the ground hallowed by the torrent of the Ganga streaming through the forest of His matted hair, with a lofty garland of serpents swaying upon His neck, to the beat of His drum sounding ‘damad-damad-damad-daman’ Shiva danced the fierce Tandava, may He grant us prosperity.

Moment by moment may my love grow for Shiva, on whose head the heavenly river swirls within the cauldron of His matted locks, its restless rippling waves agleam, on whose broad forehead the fire blazes ‘dhagad-dhagad’, and who bears the young crescent moon as His crest.
Commentary

May my mind find delight in Shiva the sky-clad, whose heart rejoices in loving play with Parvati, the lovely daughter of the mountain-king, and whose unbroken stream of compassionate sidelong glances wards off even the most unbearable misfortunes.
Commentary

May my mind hold wondrous delight in Shiva, Lord of all beings, the tawny glow of the jewel on the serpent coiled in His matted hair tints the faces of the maidens of the quarters as with saffron, and He is wrapped in the upper garment of the hide of a rut-maddened elephant.
Commentary

May Shiva, at whose footstool the ground lies grey with pollen-dust from the flowers on the bowed crowns of all the gods led by thousand-eyed Indra, who has bound His matted top-knot with the king of serpents as a garland, and who wears upon His crest the moon, friend of the chakora bird, bring us lasting prosperity.
Commentary

May the matted-locked head of Shiva be for our prosperity, He who consumed the five-arrowed god of love in the blazing sparks of fire on the courtyard of His forehead, before whom the chief of the gods bows low, whose crest gleams with the nectar-rayed crescent, the great bearer of the skull.
Commentary

My love is set on the three-eyed Shiva, into the fire blazing ‘dhagad-dhagad’ on the dread band of whose forehead the fierce five-arrowed god of love was offered as oblation, and who is the sole artist in tracing delicate leaf-designs upon the breast of Parvati, daughter of the mountain-king.
Commentary

May Shiva bestow prosperity, whose throat is dark as the dense gloom of a new-moon midnight, irresistible as a bank of fresh clouds, who bears the celestial river, is clad in the elephant’s hide, is graced by the receptacle of the moon’s crescent, and upholds the burden of the world.
Commentary

I worship Shiva, whose throat glows with a darkness like a full-blown blue lotus, who severed the god of love, destroyed the three cities, cut off the round of birth, wrecked Daksha’s sacrifice, slew the elephant-demon and Andhaka, and overcame Death itself.
Commentary

I worship Shiva, a bee revelling in the sweet flowing nectar of the blossom-cluster of all abounding auspicious arts; the ender of the god of love, of the three cities, of worldly bondage, of Daksha’s sacrifice, of the elephant-demon, of Andhaka, and the very ender of Death.
Commentary

Victory to Shiva, the dread fire on whose forehead flares up in time with the breath of the serpents whirling in wild agitation, and who set the fierce Tandava in motion to the lofty, auspicious ‘dhimi-dhimi-dhimi’ beat of the drum.
Commentary

When shall I worship Sadashiva, looking with an equal eye on a stone and a fine couch, on a garland of serpents and one of pearls, on a precious gem and a clod of clay, on friend and foe, on a blade of grass and a lotus-eyed beauty, on the common throng and the mighty king?
Commentary

When, dwelling in a hollow amid the bowers by the celestial river, forever rid of evil thoughts, bearing folded hands upon my head, with eyes brimming in devotion and an auspicious mark on my brow, uttering the mantra ‘Shiva’, when shall I be truly happy?
Commentary

May Shiva, enchanting with the warm honey streaming from the jasmine and kadamba blossoms wreathed on the crowns of the celestial women, He who is the highest glory’s supreme abode, a mass of radiance streaming from His own form, spread playful joy in our hearts day and night.
Commentary

May the utterance ‘Shiva’, that adorning mantra whose glory spreads like the fierce submarine fire, that summons the eight great siddhis like beloved maidens, whose sound rings like festive bridal music, arise for the conquest of the world.
Commentary

Whoever daily reads, recollects, or recites this loftiest of hymns, just as it is spoken, attains unceasing purity; he swiftly gains deep devotion to Hara, the supreme Guru, and seeks no other path, for to meditate on the gracious Shankara is to dispel the delusion of all embodied souls.
