Om. O gods, may we hear what is auspicious with our ears; may we see what is auspicious with our eyes, O worshipful ones. With steady limbs and bodies, may we, offering praise, enjoy the life allotted by the gods. May Indra of great fame bless us; may the all-knowing Pushan bless us; may Tarkshya (Garuda), the averter of harm, bless us; may Brihaspati grant us well-being. Om, peace, peace, peace.
Commentary
oṃ brahmā devānāṃ prathamaḥ saṃbabhūva viśvasya kartā bhuvanasya goptā |sa brahmavidyāṃ sarvavidyāpratiṣṭhāmatharvāya jyeṣṭhaputrāya prāha || 1||
Om. Brahma was the first of the gods to come into being, the maker of all, the protector of the world. He told the knowledge of Brahman, the foundation of all knowledge, to his eldest son Atharvan.
Commentary
atharvaṇe yāṃ pravadeta brahmā'tharvā taṃ purovācāṅgire brahmavidyām |sa bhāradvājāya satyavāhāya prāha bhāradvājo'ṅgirase parāvarām || 2||
The knowledge of Brahman which Brahma told to Atharvan, Atharvan of old declared to Angir; he told it to Bharadvaja Satyavaha, and Bharadvaja told the higher and lower (knowledge) to Angiras.
Commentary
śaunako ha vai mahāśālo'ṅgirasaṃ vidhivadupasannaḥ papraccha |kasminnu bhagavo vijñāte sarvamidaṃ vijñātaṃ bhavatīti || 3||
Shaunaka, the great householder, approaching Angiras in the prescribed manner, asked: ‘O Lord, what is that by knowing which all this becomes known?’
Commentary
tasmai sa hovāca |dve vidye veditavye iti ha sma yadbrahmavido vadanti parā caivāparā ca || 4||
To him he said: ‘Two kinds of knowledge are to be known, so say the knowers of Brahman, the higher (para) and the lower (apara).’
Commentary
tatrāparā ṛgvedo yajurvedaḥ sāmavedo'tharvavedaḥ śikṣā kalpo vyākaraṇaṃ niruktaṃ chando jyotiṣamiti |atha parā yayā tadakṣaramadhigamyate || 5||
Of these, the lower is the Rigveda, the Yajurveda, the Samaveda, the Atharvaveda, phonetics, ritual, grammar, etymology, metre, and astrology; and the higher is that by which the Imperishable (akshara) is attained.
Commentary
yattadadreśyamagrāhyamagotramavarṇamacakṣuḥśrotraṃ tadapāṇipādam |nityaṃ vibhuṃ sarvagataṃ susūkṣmaṃ tadavyayaṃ yadbhūtayoniṃ paripaśyanti dhīrāḥ || 6||
That which is invisible, ungraspable, without origin, without attributes, without eye or ear, without hands or feet; the eternal, all-pervading, omnipresent, exceedingly subtle, undecaying, the wise behold that as the source of all beings.
Commentary
yathorṇanābhiḥ sṛjate gṛhṇate ca yathā pṛthivyāmoṣadhayaḥ saṃbhavanti |yathā sataḥ puruṣātkeśalomāni tathā'kṣarātsaṃbhavatīha viśvam || 7||
As the spider sends forth and draws in (its thread), as plants grow from the earth, as hair grows from the body of a living person, so from the Imperishable arises all this universe.
Commentary
tapasā cīyate brahma tato'nnamabhijāyate |annātprāṇo manaḥ satyaṃ lokāḥ karmasu cāmṛtam || 8||
By tapas (the will to create) Brahman expands; from it food (the unmanifest) is born; from food, the vital breath, mind, the (five) elements (truth), the worlds, and (in) works, immortality.
Commentary
yaḥ sarvajñaḥ sarvavidyasya jñānamayaṃ tapaḥ |tasmādetadbrahma nāma rūpamannaṃ ca jāyate || 9||
He who is all-knowing and all-wise, whose tapas consists of knowledge, from Him are born this Brahma (Hiranyagarbha), name, form, and food.
Commentary
Mundaka 1 · Khanda 2

This is the truth: the (sacrificial) works which the sages saw in the hymns are variously spread out in the three Vedas. Practise them constantly, O lovers of truth, this is your path to the world of good deeds.
Commentary
yadā lelāyate hyarciḥ samiddhe havyavāhane |tadā''jyabhāgāvantareṇā''hutīḥ pratipādayet || 2||
When the flame flickers after the fire is well kindled, then, between the two offerings of clarified butter, one should cast the oblations with faith.
Commentary
yasyāgnihotramadarśamapaurṇamāsamacāturmāsyamanāgrayaṇamatithivarjitaṃ ca |ahutamavaiśvadevamavidhinā hutamāsaptamāṃstasya lokān hinasti || 3||
Whose Agnihotra is not followed by the new-moon and full-moon rites, the four-month rites, the harvest rite; is without guests, unoffered, without the Vaishvadeva, or offered against the rule, it destroys his worlds up to the seventh.
Commentary
kālī karālī ca manojavā ca sulohitā yā ca sudhūmravarṇā |sphuliṅginī viśvarucī ca devī lelāyamānā iti sapta jihvāḥ || 4||
Kali (black), Karali (terrible), Manojava (swift as thought), Sulohita (very red), Sudhumravarna (smoke-coloured), Sphulingini (sparkling), and the shining Vishvaruchi, these flickering ones are the seven tongues (of the sacrificial fire).
Commentary
eteṣu yaścarate bhrājamāneṣu yathākālaṃ cāhutayo hyādadāyan |taṃ nayantyetāḥ sūryasya raśmayo yatra devānāṃ patireko'dhivāsaḥ || 5||
He who performs his works when these (tongues) are shining, offering the oblations at the proper times, these (oblations), as rays of the sun, carry him to where the one lord of the gods dwells.
Commentary
ehyehīti tamāhutayaḥ suvarcasaḥ sūryasya raśmibhiryajamānaṃ vahanti |priyāṃ vācamabhivadantyo'rcayantya eṣa vaḥ puṇyaḥ sukṛto brahmalokaḥ || 6||
‘Come, come!’, these radiant oblations carry the sacrificer by the rays of the sun, addressing him with pleasing words and honouring him: ‘This is your holy world of Brahman, won by good deeds.’
Commentary
plavā hyete adṛḍhā yajñarūpā aṣṭādaśoktamavaraṃ yeṣu karma |etacchreyo ye'bhinandanti mūḍhā jarāmṛtyuṃ te punarevāpi yanti || 7||
But frail indeed are these boats of sacrifice, on which rest the eighteen (forms of) inferior works. The deluded who delight in this as the highest good go again to old age and death.
Commentary
avidyāyāmantare vartamānāḥ svayaṃ dhīrāḥ paṇḍitaṃmanyamānāḥ |jaṅghanyamānāḥ pariyanti mūḍhā andhenaiva nīyamānā yathāndhāḥ || 8||
Dwelling in the midst of ignorance, thinking themselves wise and learned, the deluded go round and round, afflicted, like blind men led by the blind.
Commentary
avidyāyāṃ bahudhā vartamānā vayaṃ kṛtārthā ityabhimanyanti bālāḥ |yatkarmiṇo na pravedayanti rāgāttenāturāḥ kṣīṇalokāścyavante || 9||
Dwelling in ignorance in many ways, the childish fancy ‘we have accomplished our aim.’ Because the doers of works do not know (the truth) through attachment, they fall, their worlds exhausted, and become wretched.
Commentary
iṣṭāpūrtaṃ manyamānā variṣṭhaṃ nānyacchreyo vedayante pramūḍhāḥ |nākasya pṛṣṭhe te sukṛte'nubhūtvemaṃ lokaṃ hīnataraṃ vā viśanti || 10||
Regarding sacrifice and good works as the best, the deluded know nothing better. Having enjoyed (the fruit) on the height of heaven won by good deeds, they enter again this world or a lower one.
Commentary
tapaḥśraddhe ye hyupavasantyaraṇye śāntā vidvāṃso bhaikṣyacaryāṃ carantaḥ |sūryadvāreṇa te virajāḥ prayānti yatrāmṛtaḥ sa puruṣo hyavyayātmā || 11||
But those who practise tapas and faith in the forest, tranquil and wise, living on alms, they depart, free from passion, through the door of the sun, to where dwells the immortal, imperishable Purusha.
Commentary
parīkṣya lokān karmacitān brāhmaṇo nirvedamāyānnāstyakṛtaḥ kṛtena |tadvijñānārthaṃ sa gurumevābhigacchet samitpāṇiḥ śrotriyaṃ brahmaniṣṭham || 12||
Having examined the worlds won by works, let the Brahmana arrive at dispassion: the uncreated (eternal) is not (gained) by the created (by works). To know That, let him, fuel in hand, approach a teacher who is learned in the Vedas and established in Brahman.
Commentary
tasmai sa vidvānupasannāya samyak praśāntacittāya śamānvitāya |yenākṣaraṃ puruṣaṃ veda satyaṃ provāca tāṃ tattvato brahmavidyām || 13||
To him who has thus approached, whose mind is tranquil and who has attained peace, the wise teacher should rightly teach that knowledge of Brahman by which one knows the true, imperishable Purusha.
Commentary
Mundaka 2 · Khanda 1

This is the truth: as from a blazing fire thousands of sparks of the same nature spring forth, so, O dear one, manifold beings are born from the Imperishable, and into It they return.
Commentary

divyo hyamūrtaḥ puruṣaḥ sabāhyābhyantaro hyajaḥ |aprāṇo hyamanāḥ śubhro hyakṣarātparataḥ paraḥ || 2||
Divine and formless is the Purusha; He is outside and within, unborn, without breath, without mind, pure, higher than the high Imperishable.
Commentary
etasmājjāyate prāṇo manaḥ sarvendriyāṇi ca |khaṃ vāyurjyotirāpaḥ pṛthivī viśvasya dhāriṇī || 3||
From Him are born the vital breath, the mind, all the senses, and ether, air, fire, water, and earth, the supporter of all.
Commentary

Fire is His head, the sun and moon His eyes, the quarters His ears, the revealed Vedas His speech; air is His breath, the universe His heart; from His feet (came) the earth. He is the inner Self of all beings.
Commentary
tasmādagniḥ samidho yasya sūryaḥ somātparjanya oṣadhayaḥ pṛthivyām |pumān retaḥ siñcati yoṣitāyāṃ bahvīḥ prajāḥ puruṣātsaṃprasūtāḥ || 5||
From Him (comes) fire, whose fuel is the sun; from the moon, rain; from rain, the plants on the earth; (from plants) the male sheds seed in the female. Thus many creatures are produced from the Purusha.
Commentary

From Him (arise) the Rik, Saman, Yajus, initiation, all the sacrifices, rites, gifts, the year, the sacrificer, and the worlds which the moon and the sun sanctify.
Commentary

From Him are produced manifold gods, the Sadhyas, men, beasts, birds; the in-breath and out-breath, rice and barley, tapas, faith, truth, brahmacarya, and the rule (of conduct).
Commentary

From Him spring the seven pranas (senses), the seven flames, the seven fuels, the seven oblations, and these seven worlds in which the pranas move, set, seven and seven, in the secret cave (of each being).
Commentary

From Him (come) all the seas and mountains; from Him flow rivers of every kind; from Him (come) all plants and their sap, by which the inner Self abides among the elements.
Commentary

The Purusha alone is all this, works, tapas, and Brahman, the supreme immortal. He who knows this as set in the cave (of the heart), O dear one, cuts asunder the knot of ignorance here (in this life).
Commentary

Manifest, set close (in the heart), moving in the cave, such is the great support; in It all this is fixed, what moves, breathes, and winks. Know That as being and non-being, the most adorable, the highest beyond the understanding of creatures.
Commentary

Commentary

Taking the great weapon, the bow of the Upanishads, fix on it the arrow sharpened by meditation. Drawing it with the mind absorbed in the nature of That, hit the mark, O dear one, that very Imperishable.
Commentary

Om is the bow, the Self is the arrow, and Brahman is said to be its target. It is to be hit by the undistracted one; then, like the arrow, one becomes one with It.
Commentary

In whom the heaven, the earth, and the mid-region are woven, together with the mind and all the pranas, know Him alone as the one Self, and give up other words; He is the bridge to immortality.
Commentary

Where the nerves of the heart come together like spokes in the hub of a wheel, there He moves within, becoming manifold. Meditate on the Self as Om; may there be well-being for you in crossing to the far shore beyond darkness.
Commentary

He who is all-knowing and all-wise, whose is this glory on earth, this Self is established in the divine city of Brahman, in the ether (of the heart). He is of the nature of mind, the leader of the pranas and the body, set in food (the body), holding the heart. By the knowledge of That, the wise behold on every side that blissful, immortal one which shines forth.
Commentary

Commentary

In the supreme golden sheath is Brahman, stainless and without parts; It is pure, the Light of lights, that which the knowers of the Self know.
Commentary

There the sun does not shine, nor the moon and stars; these lightnings do not shine, how then this fire? When He shines, everything shines after Him; by His light all this is lit.
Commentary

Brahman alone is this immortal (reality) in front; Brahman behind, Brahman to the right and the left; below and above It is spread out. Brahman alone is all this, the greatest.
Commentary

Two birds, companions ever united, cling to the same tree. Of the two, one eats the sweet fruit; the other looks on without eating.
Commentary

On the same tree, the individual soul (purusha), sunk (in attachment), grieves, deluded by his powerlessness. But when he sees the other, the worshipped Lord, and His glory, he becomes free from grief.
Commentary

When the seer beholds the golden-hued Maker, the Lord, the Purusha, the source of Brahma, then, becoming wise, shaking off good and evil, stainless, he attains the supreme equality (with Him).
Commentary

This (Self) is verily the life-breath that shines through all beings. Knowing Him, the wise man becomes one who speaks of nothing else; sporting in the Self, delighting in the Self, active (in the right way), he is the best of the knowers of Brahman.
Commentary

This Self is attainable by truth, by tapas, by right knowledge, by ever (-practised) brahmacarya. Within the body, luminous and pure, He is seen by the ascetics whose faults are destroyed.
Commentary

Truth alone triumphs, not falsehood. By truth is laid the divine path (devayana) by which the desireless sages ascend to where is that supreme treasure of truth.
Commentary

Vast, divine, of inconceivable form, subtler than the subtle, It shines forth; far beyond the far, yet here close at hand, set here in the cave (of the heart) of the seeing ones.
Commentary

He is not grasped by the eye, nor by speech, nor by the other senses, nor by tapas or works. When one’s nature is purified by the serenity of knowledge, then, meditating, one sees Him, the indivisible.
Commentary

This subtle Self is to be known by the mind (consciousness), in which the prana has entered fivefold. The whole mind of creatures is interwoven with the pranas; when it is purified, this Self shines forth.
Commentary

Whatever world the man of purified nature pictures in his mind and whatever desires he desires, that very world he wins, and those desires. Therefore let one who seeks prosperity worship the knower of the Self.
Commentary

He knows that supreme abode of Brahman, in which the universe rests, shining pure. The wise who, free from desire, worship the Purusha, transcend this seed (of rebirth).
Commentary

He who broods over desires, thinking (of them), is born here and there through his desires. But for one whose desires are fulfilled (in the Self) and whose Self is realized, all desires dissolve even here.
Commentary

This Self cannot be attained by study, nor by intellect, nor by much hearing. He whom the Self chooses, by him alone is It attained; to him the Self reveals Its own form.
Commentary

This Self cannot be attained by the weak, nor through heedlessness, nor by tapas devoid of the right marks (sannyasa). But the wise one who strives by these means, his Self enters the abode of Brahman.
Commentary

Commentary

Those ascetics who have well ascertained the truth through the knowledge of Vedanta, of purified nature, through the yoga of renunciation, they, in the worlds of Brahman, at the end of time, being supremely immortal, are all completely liberated.
Commentary

The fifteen parts (of the body) go to their (cosmic) supports, and all the senses (devas) to their corresponding deities; the works and the knowing self, all become one in the supreme, undecaying (Brahman).
Commentary

As flowing rivers disappear into the sea, giving up name and form, so the knower, freed from name and form, attains the divine Purusha, higher than the high.
Commentary

He who knows that supreme Brahman becomes Brahman itself. In his line none is born who does not know Brahman. He crosses over sorrow, crosses over sin; freed from the knots of the heart, he becomes immortal.

This is declared by the Rik verse: those who perform works, who are learned in the Vedas, established in Brahman, who with faith offer oblations to the sole seer (Agni/the One), to them alone should one teach this knowledge of Brahman, (to those) by whom the Head-Vow (shirovrata) has been duly observed.

tadetatsatyamṛṣiraṅgirāḥ purovāca naitadacīrṇavrato'dhīte |namaḥ paramaṛṣibhyo namaḥ paramaṛṣibhyaḥ || 11||
This is the truth which the seer Angiras declared of old. One who has not observed the vow does not study (deserve) it. Salutation to the supreme seers! Salutation to the supreme seers!
Commentary
