Aitareya Upanishad

aitareyopaniṣat

The Aitareya Upanishad, belonging to the Rigveda (from the Aitareya Aranyaka), is a short Upanishad in three chapters, the first of which has three sections. It teaches that before creation the Self (Atman) alone existed and thought forth the worlds, their guardian deities, and their food; that the Self then entered the body through the crown of the head and beheld itself as Brahman, whence its secret name Idandra, indirectly called Indra.

May my speech be founded on my mind; may my mind be founded on my speech. O self-effulgent Brahman, reveal Yourself to me. May mind and speech bring me the (substance of the) Veda; may what I have heard not depart from me. By this study I join day with night. I shall speak of the right (rita); I shall speak the true (satya). May That protect me; may That protect the teacher, protect me, protect the teacher, protect the teacher. Om, peace, peace, peace.

Commentary

Commentary

He created these worlds: ambhas (the waters above the heaven), the marichis (the shining mid-region), mara (the mortal, the earth), and the (nether) waters. Beyond, above the heaven, is ambhas, with the heaven for its support; the marichis are the mid-air; the earth is mara; and below are the waters.

Commentary

Verse 1.4

He thought, ‘Here now are the worlds; let me create guardians for the worlds.’ From the very waters He drew forth a Person (purusha) and gave him a form.

Commentary

Commentary

He brought a man for them; they said, ‘Ah, well made!’, for man is verily a thing well made. He said to them, ‘Enter, each into your respective abode.’

Commentary

Hunger and thirst said to Him, ‘For us two also, appoint a place.’ He said to them, ‘I assign you a share in these very deities; I make you sharers with them.’ Therefore, to whatever deity an oblation is offered, hunger and thirst become sharers in it.

Commentary

Commentary

Commentary

Verse 3.12

Parting (the skull) at this very suture, He entered through that door. This door is known as the vidriti (‘the cleft’); this is the seat of bliss. For him there are three dwelling-places, three (states of) dream: this (waking) is a dwelling, this (dream) is a dwelling, this (deep sleep) is a dwelling.

Commentary

Being (as it were) born, He looked upon the beings, (thinking) ‘What here would one wish to call other (than Brahman)?’ He beheld this very Person as the all-pervading Brahman, and said, ‘I have seen This (idam adarsham)!’

Commentary

tasmādidandro nāmedandro ha vai nāma |tamidandraṃ santamindra ityācakṣate parokṣeṇa |parokṣapriyā iva hi devāḥ parokṣapriyā iva hi devāḥ || 14||

Therefore He is named Idandra (‘the seer of This’); Idandra is indeed His name. Though He is Idandra, they call Him ‘Indra’ indirectly; for the gods, as it were, love the indirect, yea, the gods love the indirect.

Commentary

Adhyaya 2

Verse 4.1

This (self) first comes to be in a man as an embryo, namely the semen. This is the vigour gathered from all the limbs; he bears the self in his own self. When he sheds it into a woman, he gives it birth, that is its first birth.

Commentary

tatstriyā ātmabhūyaṃ gacchati yathā svamaṅgaṃ tathā |tasmādenāṃ na hinasti |sā'syaitamātmānamatra gataṃ bhāvayati || 2||

It becomes one with the woman’s own self, as if her own limb; therefore it does not harm her. She nourishes this self of his that has entered her.

Commentary

She, the nourisher, becomes worthy of being nourished. The woman bears the embryo. He (the father) nourishes the child both before and after birth. In nourishing the child before and after birth, he nourishes his own self, for the continuance of these worlds; for thus are these worlds continued. This is its second birth.

Commentary

This was declared by the seer (Vamadeva): ‘While yet lying in the womb, I knew all the births of the gods. A hundred iron citadels held me down; yet, like a hawk, I burst forth with speed.’ Vamadeva spoke thus even while lying in the womb.

Commentary
