श्री भगवान् उवाचमय्यासक्तमनाः पार्थ योगं युञ्जन् मदाश्रयः।असंशयं समग्रं मां यथा ज्ञास्यसि तच् छृणु।।7.1।।
śrī bhagavān uvācamayyāsaktamanāḥ pārtha yogaṃ yuñjan madāśrayaḥ|asaṃśayaṃ samagraṃ māṃ yathā jñāsyasi tac chṛṇu||7.1||
Lord Shri Krishna said: Listen, O Arjuna! I will tell you how you can know Me in my full perfection. Practise meditation with your mind devoted to Me and take Me as your refuge.
Commentary
ज्ञानं ते ऽहं सविज्ञानम् इदं वक्ष्याम्यशेषतः।यज् ज्ञात्वा नेह भूयो ऽन्यज् ज्ञातव्यमवशिष्यते।।7.2।।
jñānaṃ te 'haṃ savijñānam idaṃ vakṣyāmyaśeṣataḥ|yaj jñātvā neha bhūyo 'nyaj jñātavyamavaśiṣyate||7.2||
I will reveal this knowledge to you and how it can be realized; once accomplished, there is nothing else worth having in this life.

हिन्दी अर्थ
मैं तुम्हें यह ज्ञान विज्ञान सहित पूरी तरह कह दूँगा, जिसे जान लेने पर इस संसार में जानने योग्य और कुछ शेष नहीं रह जाता।
मनुष्याणां सहस्रेषु कश्चिद् यतति सिद्धये।यतताम् अपि सिद्धानां कश्चिन् मां वेत्ति तत्त्वतः।।7.3।।
manuṣyāṇāṃ sahasreṣu kaścid yatati siddhaye|yatatām api siddhānāṃ kaścin māṃ vetti tattvataḥ||7.3||
Among thousands of men, scarcely one strives for perfection, and even among those who gain occult powers, perhaps only one knows me in truth.

हजारों मनुष्यों में कोई एक ही सिद्धि के लिए प्रयत्न करता है, और ऐसे यत्न करने वाले सिद्ध पुरुषों में भी कोई विरला ही मुझे यथार्थ रूप में जान पाता है।
भूमिरापो ऽनलो वायुः खं मनो बुद्धिर् एव च।अहङ्कार इतीयं मे भिन्ना प्रकृतिर् अष्टधा।।7.4।।
bhūmirāpo 'nalo vāyuḥ khaṃ mano buddhir eva ca|ahaṅkāra itīyaṃ me bhinnā prakṛtir aṣṭadhā||7.4||
Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intellect, and personality, this is the eightfold division of My manifested nature.

पृथ्वी, जल, अग्नि, वायु, आकाश, मन, बुद्धि और अहंकार, इन आठ भेदों वाली यह मेरी अपरा (जड़) प्रकृति है।
अपरेयम् इतस् त्वन्यां प्रकृतिं विद्धि मे पराम्।जीवभूतां महाबाहो ययेदं धार्यते जगत्।।7.5।।
apareyam itas tvanyāṃ prakṛtiṃ viddhi me parām|jīvabhūtāṃ mahābāho yayedaṃ dhāryate jagat||7.5||
This is My inferior nature; however, O valiant one, know that distinct from this is My superior nature, which is the very life that sustains the universe.

हिन्दी अर्थ
हे महाबाहो (अर्जुन)! यह तो मेरी निम्न प्रकृति है; इससे भिन्न मेरी एक परा (श्रेष्ठ) प्रकृति को भी जानो, जो जीवरूप है और जिसके द्वारा यह सारा जगत् धारण किया जाता है।
एतद्योनीनि भूतानि सर्वाणीत्युपधारय।अहं कृत्स्नस्य जगतः प्रभवः प्रलयस् तथा।।7.6।।
etadyonīni bhūtāni sarvāṇītyupadhāraya|ahaṃ kṛtsnasya jagataḥ prabhavaḥ pralayas tathā||7.6||
It is the womb of all beings; for I am He by Whom the worlds were created and shall be dissolved.

हिन्दी अर्थ
यह समझ लो कि समस्त प्राणी इन्हीं दोनों प्रकृतियों से उत्पन्न होते हैं; मैं ही इस सम्पूर्ण जगत् की उत्पत्ति और प्रलय का मूल कारण हूँ।
मत्तः परतरं नान्यत् किञ्चिद् अस्ति धनञ्जय।मयि सर्वम् इदं प्रोतं सूत्रे मणिगणा इव।।7.7।।
mattaḥ parataraṃ nānyat kiñcid asti dhanañjaya|mayi sarvam idaṃ protaṃ sūtre maṇigaṇā iva||7.7||
O Arjuna! There is nothing higher than Me; all is strung on Me like rows of pearls on a thread.

हिन्दी अर्थ
हे धनंजय (अर्जुन)! मुझसे श्रेष्ठ और कुछ भी नहीं है; जैसे सूत्र में मणियाँ पिरोई रहती हैं, वैसे ही यह सम्पूर्ण जगत् मुझमें ही गुँथा हुआ है।
रसो ऽहम् अप्सु कौन्तेय प्रभास्मि शशिसूर्ययोः।प्रणवः सर्ववेदेषु शब्दः खे पौरुषं नृषु।।7.8।।
raso 'ham apsu kaunteya prabhāsmi śaśisūryayoḥ|praṇavaḥ sarvavedeṣu śabdaḥ khe pauruṣaṃ nṛṣu||7.8||
O Arjuna! I am the fluidity in water, the light in the sun and moon, the mystic syllable Om in the Vedic scriptures, the sound in ether, and the virility in man.

हे कौन्तेय (अर्जुन)! मैं जल में रस हूँ, चन्द्र और सूर्य में प्रकाश हूँ, समस्त वेदों में ॐकार हूँ, आकाश में शब्द हूँ और मनुष्यों में पुरुषार्थ हूँ।
पुण्यो गन्धः पृथिव्यां च तेजश् चास्मि विभावसौ।जीवनं सर्वभूतेषु तपश् चास्मि तपस्विषु।।7.9।।
puṇyo gandhaḥ pṛthivyāṃ ca tejaś cāsmi vibhāvasau|jīvanaṃ sarvabhūteṣu tapaś cāsmi tapasviṣu||7.9||
I am the fragrance of the earth, the brilliance of fire, the life force in all beings, and the austerity of ascetics.

मैं पृथ्वी में पवित्र गन्ध हूँ, अग्नि में तेज हूँ, समस्त प्राणियों में जीवन हूँ और तपस्वियों में तप हूँ।
बीजं मां सर्वभूतानां विद्धि पार्थ सनातनम्।बुद्धिर् बुद्धिमताम् अस्मि तेजस् तेजस्विनाम् अहम्।।7.10।।
bījaṃ māṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ viddhi pārtha sanātanam|buddhir buddhimatām asmi tejas tejasvinām aham||7.10||
Know, O Arjuna, that I am the eternal seed of being; I am the intelligence of the intelligent, the splendour of the resplendent.

हिन्दी अर्थ
हे पार्थ (अर्जुन)! मुझे समस्त प्राणियों का सनातन बीज जानो; मैं बुद्धिमानों की बुद्धि और तेजस्वियों का तेज हूँ।
बलं बलवतां चाहं कामरागविवर्जितम्।धर्माविरुद्धो भूतेषु कामो ऽस्मि भरतर्षभ।।7.11।।
balaṃ balavatāṃ cāhaṃ kāmarāgavivarjitam|dharmāviruddho bhūteṣu kāmo 'smi bharatarṣabha||7.11||
I am the strength of the strong, those who are free from attachment and desire; and, O Arjuna, I am the desire for righteousness.

हिन्दी अर्थ
हे भरतश्रेष्ठ (अर्जुन)! मैं बलवानों का काम और राग से रहित बल हूँ, और प्राणियों में धर्म के अनुकूल काम (इच्छा) भी मैं ही हूँ।
ये चैव सात्त्विका भावा राजसास् तामसाश् च ये।मत्त एवेति तान् विद्धि न त्वहं तेषु ते मयि।।7.12।।
ye caiva sāttvikā bhāvā rājasās tāmasāś ca ye|matta eveti tān viddhi na tvahaṃ teṣu te mayi||7.12||
Whatever be the nature of their life, whether it be pure, passionate, or ignorant, they are all derived from Me. They are in Me, but I am not in them.

हिन्दी अर्थ
जो भी सात्त्विक, राजसिक और तामसिक भाव हैं, उन सबको मुझसे ही उत्पन्न जानो; किन्तु वे मुझमें हैं, मैं उनमें नहीं हूँ।
त्रिभिर् गुणमयैर् भावैर् एभिः सर्वम् इदं जगत्।मोहितं नाभिजानाति मामेभ्यः परम् अव्ययम्।।7.13।।
tribhir guṇamayair bhāvair ebhiḥ sarvam idaṃ jagat|mohitaṃ nābhijānāti māmebhyaḥ param avyayam||7.13||
The inhabitants of the world, misled by the natures engendered by the Qualities, do not know that I am higher than them all and that I do not change.

हिन्दी अर्थ
इन तीनों गुणों से उपजे भावों से मोहित होकर यह सारा संसार मुझ अविनाशी परम तत्त्व को नहीं पहचान पाता, जो इन गुणों से परे है।
दैवी ह्येषा गुणमयी मम माया दुरत्यया।माम् एव ये प्रपद्यन्ते मायाम् एतां तरन्ति ते।।7.14।।
daivī hyeṣā guṇamayī mama māyā duratyayā|mām eva ye prapadyante māyām etāṃ taranti te||7.14||
Verily, this divine illusion of phenomenon manifesting itself in the qualities is difficult to surmount. Only they who devote themselves exclusively to Me can accomplish it.

हिन्दी अर्थ
गुणों से बनी हुई मेरी यह दैवी माया दुस्तर है; किन्तु जो केवल मेरी ही शरण ग्रहण करते हैं, वे इस माया को पार कर जाते हैं।
न मां दुष्कृतिनो मूढाः प्रपद्यन्ते नराधमाः।माययापहृतज्ञाना आसुरं भावम् आश्रिताः।।7.15।।
na māṃ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ|māyayāpahṛtajñānā āsuraṃ bhāvam āśritāḥ||7.15||
The sinner, the ignorant, the vile, deprived of spiritual perception by the glamour of illusion, and he who leads a godless life, none of them shall find me.

हिन्दी अर्थ
जिनका ज्ञान माया द्वारा हर लिया गया है और जो आसुरी भाव का आश्रय लिए हुए हैं, ऐसे दुष्कर्मी, मूढ़ और नराधम मनुष्य मेरी शरण में नहीं आते।
चतुर्विधा भजन्ते मां जनाः सुकृतिनो ऽर्जुन।आर्तो जिज्ञासुर् अर्थार्थी ज्ञानी च भरतर्षभ।।7.16।।
caturvidhā bhajante māṃ janāḥ sukṛtino 'rjuna|ārto jijñāsur arthārthī jñānī ca bharatarṣabha||7.16||
O Arjuna! The righteous who worship Me are grouped in stages: first, those who suffer, next those who desire knowledge, then those who thirst after truth, and lastly those who attain wisdom.

हिन्दी अर्थ
हे भरतश्रेष्ठ अर्जुन! पुण्यकर्म करने वाले चार प्रकार के लोग मुझे भजते हैं, दुःख से पीड़ित (आर्त), जिज्ञासु, धन का अर्थी (अर्थार्थी) और ज्ञानी।
तेषां ज्ञानी नित्ययुक्त एकभक्तिर् विशिष्यते।प्रियो हि ज्ञानिनो ऽत्यर्थम् अहं स च मम प्रियः।।7.17।।
teṣāṃ jñānī nityayukta ekabhaktir viśiṣyate|priyo hi jñānino 'tyartham ahaṃ sa ca mama priyaḥ||7.17||
Of all these, he who has gained wisdom, who meditates on Me without ceasing, devoting himself solely to Me, is the best; for I am exceedingly beloved by the wise man, and the wise man is also beloved by Me.

इनमें सदा मुझसे युक्त रहने वाला और अनन्य भक्ति वाला ज्ञानी श्रेष्ठ है; क्योंकि मैं ज्ञानी को अत्यन्त प्रिय हूँ और वह मुझे अत्यन्त प्रिय है।
उदाराः सर्व एवैते ज्ञानी त्वात्मैव मे मतम्।आस्थितः स हि युक्तात्मा माम् एवानुत्तमां गतिम्।।7.18।।
udārāḥ sarva evaite jñānī tvātmaiva me matam|āsthitaḥ sa hi yuktātmā mām evānuttamāṃ gatim||7.18||
Noble-minded are they all, but the wise man I hold as my own self; for he, remaining always at peace with me, makes me his ultimate goal.

ये सभी भक्त उदार हैं, किन्तु ज्ञानी को तो मैं अपना ही स्वरूप मानता हूँ; क्योंकि वह स्थिरचित्त भक्त मुझ अनुत्तम गति को ही अपना परम लक्ष्य बनाकर मुझमें ही स्थित रहता है।
बहूनां जन्मनाम् अन्ते ज्ञानवान् मां प्रपद्यते।वासुदेवः सर्वम् इति स महात्मा सुदुर्लभः।।7.19।।
bahūnāṃ janmanām ante jñānavān māṃ prapadyate|vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ||7.19||
After many lives, at last the wise one realizes Me as I am. It is very difficult to find a man so enlightened that he sees God everywhere.

अनेक जन्मों के अन्त में ज्ञानवान् पुरुष ‘सब कुछ वासुदेव ही है’, ऐसा जानकर मेरी शरण में आता है; ऐसा महात्मा अत्यन्त दुर्लभ है।
कामैस् तैस् तैर् हृतज्ञानाः प्रपद्यन्ते ऽन्यदेवताः।तं तं नियमम् आस्थाय प्रकृत्या नियताः स्वया।।7.20।।
kāmais tais tair hṛtajñānāḥ prapadyante 'nyadevatāḥ|taṃ taṃ niyamam āsthāya prakṛtyā niyatāḥ svayā||7.20||
They in whom wisdom is obscured by one desire or another, worship the lesser powers, practising many rites that vary according to their temperaments.

जिनका ज्ञान भाँति-भाँति की कामनाओं से हर लिया गया है, वे अपने स्वभाव से प्रेरित होकर विभिन्न नियमों का पालन करते हुए अन्य देवताओं की शरण लेते हैं।
यो यो यां यां तनुं भक्तः श्रद्धयार्चितुम् इच्छति।तस्य तस्याचलां श्रद्धां ताम् एव विदधाम्यहम्।।7.21।।
yo yo yāṃ yāṃ tanuṃ bhaktaḥ śraddhayārcitum icchati|tasya tasyācalāṃ śraddhāṃ tām eva vidadhāmyaham||7.21||
But whatever form of worship, if the devotee has faith, then I set My own seal upon their faith in that worship.

जो भक्त जिस-जिस देवस्वरूप को श्रद्धा से पूजना चाहता है, उस-उस में मैं ही उसकी श्रद्धा को अचल कर देता हूँ।
स तया श्रद्धया युक्तस् तस्याराधनम् ईहते।लभते च ततः कामान् मयैव विहितान् हि तान्।।7.22।।
sa tayā śraddhayā yuktas tasyārādhanam īhate|labhate ca tataḥ kāmān mayaiva vihitān hi tān||7.22||
If he worships one form alone with real faith, then his desires shall be fulfilled through that alone; for thus I have ordained.

वह उस श्रद्धा से युक्त होकर उस देवता की आराधना करता है और उससे अपनी कामनाओं को प्राप्त कर लेता है, किन्तु वे फल वस्तुतः मेरे द्वारा ही विधान किए हुए होते हैं।
अन्तवत् तु फलं तेषां तद् भवत्यल्पमेधसाम्।देवान् देवयजो यान्ति मद्भक्ता यान्ति माम् अपि।।7.23।।
antavat tu phalaṃ teṣāṃ tad bhavatyalpamedhasām|devān devayajo yānti madbhaktā yānti mām api||7.23||
The fruit that comes to people of limited insight is, after all, finite. Those who worship the Lower Powers attain them; but those who worship Me come to Me alone.

हिन्दी अर्थ
उन अल्पबुद्धि वालों को मिलने वाला फल नाशवान् होता है; देवताओं को पूजने वाले देवताओं को प्राप्त होते हैं, परन्तु मेरे भक्त मुझे ही प्राप्त होते हैं।
अव्यक्तं व्यक्तिम् आपन्नं मन्यन्ते माम् अबुद्धयः।परं भावम् अजानन्तो ममाव्ययम् अनुत्तमम्।।7.24।।
avyaktaṃ vyaktim āpannaṃ manyante mām abuddhayaḥ|paraṃ bhāvam ajānanto mamāvyayam anuttamam||7.24||
The ignorant think of Me, who am the Unmanifested Spirit, as if I were in human form. They do not understand that My Superior Nature is unchanging and most excellent.

बुद्धिहीन लोग मुझ अव्यक्त को व्यक्त रूप धारण किया हुआ मानते हैं; वे मेरे उस अविनाशी, सर्वश्रेष्ठ परम स्वरूप को नहीं जानते।
नाहं प्रकाशः सर्वस्य योगमायासमावृतः।मूढो ऽयं नाभिजानाति लोको माम् अजम् अव्ययम्।।7.25।।
nāhaṃ prakāśaḥ sarvasya yogamāyāsamāvṛtaḥ|mūḍho 'yaṃ nābhijānāti loko mām ajam avyayam||7.25||
I am not visible to all, for I am enveloped by the illusion of the Phenomenon. This deluded world does not know Me as the Unborn and Imperishable.

हिन्दी अर्थ
अपनी योगमाया से ढका हुआ मैं सबके सामने प्रकट नहीं होता; इसीलिए यह मूढ़ संसार मुझ अजन्मा और अविनाशी को नहीं पहचान पाता।
वेदाहं समतीतानि वर्तमानानि चार्जुन।भविष्याणि च भूतानि मां तु वेद न कश्चन।।7.26।।
vedāhaṃ samatītāni vartamānāni cārjuna|bhaviṣyāṇi ca bhūtāni māṃ tu veda na kaścana||7.26||
I know, O Arjuna, all beings in the past, the present, and the future; but they do not know Me.

हे अर्जुन! मैं भूत, वर्तमान और भविष्य, सभी प्राणियों को जानता हूँ, किन्तु मुझे कोई भी (तत्त्व से) नहीं जानता।
इच्छाद्वेषसमुत्थेन द्वन्द्वमोहेन भारत।सर्वभूतानि संमोहं सर्गे यान्ति परन्तप।।7.27।।
icchādveṣasamutthena dvandvamohena bhārata|sarvabhūtāni saṃmohaṃ sarge yānti parantapa||7.27||
O brave Arjuna! Man lives in a fantastical world, deceived by the glamour of opposing sensations, infatuated by desire and aversion.

हिन्दी अर्थ
हे भारत (अर्जुन)! इच्छा और द्वेष से उत्पन्न हुए द्वन्द्व के मोह से, हे परन्तप! समस्त प्राणी जन्म लेते ही महामोह को प्राप्त हो जाते हैं।
येषां त्वन्तगतं पापं जनानां पुण्यकर्मणाम्।ते द्वन्द्वमोहनिर्मुक्ता भजन्ते मां दृढव्रताः।।7.28।।
yeṣāṃ tvantagataṃ pāpaṃ janānāṃ puṇyakarmaṇām|te dvandvamohanirmuktā bhajante māṃ dṛḍhavratāḥ||7.28||
But those who act righteously, in whom sin has been destroyed, who are free from the infatuation of conflicting emotions, they worship Me with a firm resolve.

किन्तु जिन पुण्यकर्मी पुरुषों के पाप समाप्त हो चुके हैं, वे द्वन्द्व के मोह से मुक्त होकर दृढ़ निश्चय के साथ मुझे भजते हैं।
जरामरणमोक्षाय माम् आश्रित्य यतन्ति ये।ते ब्रह्म तद्विदुः कृत्स्नम् अध्यात्मं कर्म चाखिलम्।।7.29।।
jarāmaraṇamokṣāya mām āśritya yatanti ye|te brahma tadviduḥ kṛtsnam adhyātmaṃ karma cākhilam||7.29||
Those who make Me their refuge, striving for liberation from decay and death, realize the Supreme Spirit, which is their own real Self, and in which all action finds its consummation.

हिन्दी अर्थ
जो मेरी शरण लेकर जरा और मृत्यु से छूटने के लिए यत्न करते हैं, वे उस ब्रह्म को, सम्पूर्ण अध्यात्म को और समस्त कर्म को जान लेते हैं।
साधिभूताधिदैवं मां साधियज्ञं च ये विदुः।प्रयाणकाले ऽपि च मां ते विदुर् युक्तचेतसः।।7.30।।
sādhibhūtādhidaivaṃ māṃ sādhiyajñaṃ ca ye viduḥ|prayāṇakāle 'pi ca māṃ te vidur yuktacetasaḥ||7.30||
Those who see Me in the life of the world, in the universal sacrifice, and as pure Divinity, keeping their minds steady, they live in Me even in the hour of death’s approach.
