1 / 17

Verse Viniyoga

oṃ asya śrīkīlakamantrasya śivaṛṣiḥ, anuṣṭup chandaḥ,śrīmahāsarasvatī devatā, śrījagadambāprītyarthaṃsaptaśatīpāṭhāṅgatvena jape viniyogaḥ |oṃ namaścaṇḍikāyai |

Dedication: of this Kīlaka mantra the seer is Śiva, the metre anuṣṭubh and the deity Mahāsarasvatī; it is recited as part of the reading of the Saptaśatī, to please the Mother of the world. Om, salutation to Caṇḍikā.

Verse 1

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca |oṃ viśuddhajñānadehāya trivedīdivyacakṣuṣe |śreyaḥprāptinimittāya namaḥ somārdhadhāriṇe ||1||

Mārkaṇḍeya said: Salutation to him whose body is pure knowledge, whose divine eyes are the three Vedas, the cause of attaining the highest good, who wears the half-moon (Śiva).

Verse 2

sarvametadvijānīyānmantrāṇāmapi kīlakam |so'pi kṣemamavāpnoti satataṃ japyatatparaḥ ||2||

One should know all of this, the “pin” (kīlaka) of the mantras. Whoever is always devoted to its recitation attains well-being.

Verse 3

siddhyantyuccāṭanādīni karmāṇi sakalānyapi |etena stuvatāṃ devīṃ stotravṛndena bhaktitaḥ ||3||

For those who praise the Goddess with devotion through this collection of hymns, every rite, such as driving away harm, succeeds.

Verse 4

na mantro nauṣadhaṃ tasya na kiñcidapi vidyate |vinā japyena siddhyettu sarvamuccāṭanādikam ||4||

For such a one there is need of no other mantra, no medicine, nothing else at all: even without other recitation, every rite of protection succeeds.

Verse 5

samagrāṇyapi setsyanti lokaśaṅkāmimāṃ haraḥ |kṛtvā nimantrayāmāsa sarvamevamidaṃ śubham ||5||

“All of them will succeed”: seeing that people would doubt this, Hara (Śiva) bound this whole auspicious text with a seal.

Verse 6

stotraṃ vai caṇḍikāyāstu tacca guhyaṃ cakāra saḥ |samāpnoti sa puṇyena tāṃ yathāvannimantraṇām ||6||

He made this hymn of Caṇḍikā secret; one gains its proper unsealing through merit.

Verse 7

so'pi kṣemamavāpnoti sarvameva na saṃśayaḥ |kṛṣṇāyāṃ vā caturdaśyāmaṣṭamyāṃ vā samāhitaḥ ||7||

He too attains complete well-being, without doubt, who with a collected mind on the fourteenth or eighth day of the dark fortnight,

Verse 8

dadāti pratigṛhṇāti nānyathaiṣā prasīdati |itthaṃ rūpeṇa kīlena mahādevena kīlitam ||8||

offers (everything to the Goddess) and receives (it back as her grace); otherwise she is not pleased. In this way the text was sealed by Mahādeva with a pin.

Verse 9

yo niṣkīlāṃ vidhāyaināṃ caṇḍīṃ japati nityaśaḥ |sa siddhaḥ sa gaṇaḥ so'tha gandharvo jāyate dhruvam ||9||

Whoever unseals the Caṇḍī in this way and recites it daily surely becomes a siddha, one of the gaṇas, or a gandharva.

Verse 10

na caivāpāṭavaṃ tasya bhayaṃ kvāpi na jāyate |nāpamṛtyuvaśaṃ yāti mṛte ca mokṣamāpnuyāt ||10||

He suffers no weakness and no fear anywhere; he does not fall to untimely death, and after death attains liberation.

Verse 11

jñātvā prārabhya kurvīta hyakurvāṇo vinaśyati |tato jñātvaiva sampūrṇamidaṃ prārabhyate budhaiḥ ||11||

One should begin the recitation only after knowing this; one who does not, comes to ruin. So the wise begin only after knowing it completely.

Verse 12

saubhāgyādi ca yatkiñcid dṛśyate lalanājane |tatsarvaṃ tatprasādena tena japyamidaṃ śubham ||12||

Whatever good fortune is seen among women comes from her grace; therefore this auspicious hymn should be recited.

Verse 13

śanaistu japyamāne'smin stotre sampattiruccakaiḥ |bhavatyeva samagrāpi tataḥ prārabhyameva tat ||13||

When this hymn is recited slowly, abundant prosperity surely comes in full; so it should certainly be begun.

Verse 14

aiśvaryaṃ tatprasādena saubhāgyārogyameva ca |śatruhāniḥ paro mokṣaḥ stūyate sā na kiṃ janaiḥ ||14||

Sovereignty, good fortune, health, the defeat of enemies and the highest liberation all come by her grace: why would people not praise her?

Verse 15

caṇḍikāṃ hṛdayenāpi yaḥ smaret satataṃ naraḥ |hṛdyaṃ kāmamavāpnoti hṛdi devī sadā vaset ||15||

Whoever remembers Caṇḍikā constantly, even only in the heart, gains his heart’s desire, and the Goddess dwells in his heart for ever.

Verse 16

agrato'muṃ mahādevakṛtaṃ kīlakavāraṇam |niṣkīlañca tathā kṛtvā paṭhitavyaṃ samāhitaiḥ ||16||

First one should recite this unsealing made by Mahādeva, and having unsealed the text in this way, read it with a collected mind.
