1 / 11

Verse 1

paśūnāṃ patiṃ pāpanāśaṃ pareśaṃgajendrasya kṛttiṃ vasānaṃ vareṇyam |jaṭājūṭamadhye sphuradgāṅgavāriṃmahādevamekaṃ smarāmi smarārim ||1||

I remember the one Mahādeva, foe of Smara (Kāma): Lord of all beings, destroyer of sin, the supreme Lord, wearing the hide of the king of elephants, most worthy of worship, with the waters of Gaṅgā sparkling in his matted locks.

Verse 2

maheśaṃ sureśaṃ surārātināśaṃvibhuṃ viśvanāthaṃ vibhūtyaṅgabhūṣam |virūpākṣamindvarkavahnitrinetraṃsadānandamīḍe prabhuṃ pañcavaktram ||2||

I praise the five-faced Lord, ever blissful: the great Lord, lord of the gods, destroyer of the gods’ enemies, all-pervading, Lord of the universe, his body adorned with sacred ash, of uncommon eyes, whose three eyes are the moon, the sun and fire.

Verse 3

girīśaṃ gaṇeśaṃ gale nīlavarṇaṃgavendrādhirūḍhaṃ guṇātītarūpam |bhavaṃ bhāsvaraṃ bhasmanā bhūṣitāṅgaṃbhavānīkalatraṃ bhaje pañcavaktram ||3||

I worship the five-faced Lord: Lord of the mountain, lord of the gaṇas, blue at the throat, riding the great bull, whose form is beyond the guṇas; Bhava, shining, his limbs adorned with ash, whose consort is Bhavānī.

Verse 4

śivākānta śambho śaśāṅkārdhamaulemaheśāna śūlin jaṭājūṭadhārin |tvameko jagadvyāpako viśvarūpaḥprasīda prasīda prabho pūrṇarūpa ||4||

Beloved of Śivā, Śambhu, wearing the half-moon on your head, great Lord, bearer of the trident and matted locks: you alone pervade the world, you are the form of the universe. Be gracious, be gracious, Lord whose form is fullness.

Verse 5

parātmānamekaṃ jagadbījamādyaṃnirīhaṃ nirākāramoṅkāravedyam |yato jāyate pālyate yena viśvaṃtamīśaṃ bhaje līyate yatra viśvam ||5||

I worship that Lord, the one supreme Self, the first seed of the world, free of desire, formless, known through Oṃ; from whom the universe is born, by whom it is sustained, and into whom it dissolves.

Verse 6

na bhūmirna cāpo na vahnirna vāyurna cākāśamāste na tandrā na nidrā |na coṣṇaṃ na śītaṃ na deśo na veṣona yasyāsti mūrtistrimūrtiṃ tamīḍe ||6||

He is not earth, not water, not fire, not wind, not space; in him there is no drowsiness and no sleep, no heat and no cold, no place and no dress; he has no form, yet I praise him as the three forms (Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva).

Verse 7

ajaṃ śāśvataṃ kāraṇaṃ kāraṇānāṃśivaṃ kevalaṃ bhāsakaṃ bhāsakānām |turīyaṃ tamaḥpāramādyantahīnaṃprapadye paraṃ pāvanaṃ dvaitahīnam ||7||

I take refuge in the Supreme: unborn, eternal, the cause of all causes, auspicious, the One alone, the light that lights all lights, the fourth state, beyond darkness, without beginning or end, purifying, without a second.

Verse 8

namaste namaste vibho viśvamūrtenamaste namaste cidānandamūrte |namaste namaste tapoyogagamyanamaste namaste śrutijñānagamya ||8||

Salutation, salutation to you, all-pervading one whose form is the universe; salutation, salutation to you whose form is consciousness and bliss; salutation, salutation to you, reached by austerity and yoga; salutation, salutation to you, reached by the knowledge of the Vedas.

Verse 9

prabho śūlapāṇe vibho viśvanāthamahādeva śambho maheśa trinetra |śivākānta śānta smarāre purāretvadanyo vareṇyo na mānyo na gaṇyaḥ ||9||

O Lord with the trident in your hand, all-pervading Lord of the universe, Mahādeva, Śambhu, great Lord, three-eyed one, beloved of Śivā, peaceful one, foe of Kāma, destroyer of the three cities: there is none but you worthy to be chosen, honoured or counted.

Verse 10

śambho maheśa karuṇāmaya śūlapāṇegaurīpate paśupate paśupāśanāśin |kāśīpate karuṇayā jagadetadeka-stvaṃ haṃsi pāsi vidadhāsi maheśvaro'si ||10||

Śambhu, great Lord, compassionate one, bearer of the trident, husband of Gaurī, Lord of all beings who cuts the bonds of the bound, Lord of Kāśī: out of compassion you alone create, protect and dissolve this world. You are the great Lord.

Verse 11

tvatto jagadbhavati deva bhava smarāretvayyeva tiṣṭhati jaganmṛḍa viśvanātha |tvayyeva gacchati layaṃ jagadetadīśaliṅgātmakaṃ hara carācaraviśvarūpin ||11||

From you, O God, Bhava, foe of Kāma, the world arises; in you alone it abides, gracious Lord of the universe; into you alone, O Lord, this world goes to dissolution. O Hara, whose nature is the liṅga, whose form is the whole moving and unmoving universe.
