"A bad son may be born, but never a bad mother": Śaṅkara's twelve-verse prayer asking the Divine Mother to forgive every lapse in worship.
1 / 12
na mantraṃ no yantraṃ tadapi ca na jāne stutimahona cāhvānaṃ dhyānaṃ tadapi ca na jāne stutikathāḥ |na jāne mudrāste tadapi ca na jāne vilapanaṃparaṃ jāne mātastvadanusaraṇaṃ kleśaharaṇam ||1||
I know no mantra, no yantra, alas, not even a hymn of praise; I know no invocation, no meditation, not even the stories of your glory. I know neither your mudrās nor how to cry out to you. But this I know, Mother: following you takes away all suffering.
vidherajñānena draviṇaviraheṇālasatayāvidheyāśakyatvāttava caraṇayoryā cyutirabhūt |tadetat kṣantavyaṃ janani sakaloddhāriṇi śivekuputro jāyeta kvacidapi kumātā na bhavati ||2||
Through ignorance of the rules, lack of means and laziness, and because I could not do what was prescribed, I have fallen away from your feet. Forgive this, Mother, auspicious one who lifts up all. A bad son may be born, but a bad mother never.
pṛthivyāṃ putrāste janani bahavaḥ santi saralāḥparaṃ teṣāṃ madhye viralataralo'haṃ tava sutaḥ |madīyo'yaṃ tyāgaḥ samucitamidaṃ no tava śivekuputro jāyeta kvacidapi kumātā na bhavati ||3||
Mother, you have many simple, honest sons on this earth, and among them I am the one rare restless child. Yet it would not befit you, auspicious one, to abandon me. A bad son may be born, but a bad mother never.
jaganmātarmātastava caraṇasevā na racitāna vā dattaṃ devi draviṇamapi bhūyastava mayā |tathāpi tvaṃ snehaṃ mayi nirupamaṃ yatprakuruṣekuputro jāyeta kvacidapi kumātā na bhavati ||4||
Mother of the world, I have not served your feet, nor offered you much wealth, O Goddess. Still you shower on me a love beyond compare. A bad son may be born, but a bad mother never.
parityaktā devā vividhavidhasevākulatayāmayā pañcāśīteradhikamapanīte tu vayasi |idānīṃ cenmātastava yadi kṛpā nāpi bhavitānirālambo lambodarajanani kaṃ yāmi śaraṇam ||5||
Wearied by the many kinds of worship, I gave up all the gods, and now more than eighty-five years of my life are gone. If even now, Mother, your grace does not come to me, then helpless, O mother of Lambodara (Gaṇeśa), to whom shall I go for refuge?
śvapāko jalpāko bhavati madhupākopamagirānirātaṅko raṅko viharati ciraṃ koṭikanakaiḥ |tavāparṇe karṇe viśati manuvarṇe phalamidaṃjanaḥ ko jānīte janani japanīyaṃ japavidhau ||6||
When the syllables of your mantra enter the ear, O Aparṇā, an outcaste becomes eloquent with words sweet as honey, and a pauper lives long and fearless amid millions in gold. If that is the fruit of merely hearing it, Mother, who can know the fruit of chanting it in the proper way?
citābhasmālepo garalamaśanaṃ dikpaṭadharojaṭādhārī kaṇṭhe bhujagapatihārī paśupatiḥ |kapālī bhūteśo bhajati jagadīśaikapadavīṃbhavāni tvatpāṇigrahaṇaparipāṭīphalamidam ||7||
Smeared with the ashes of the pyre, drinking poison, clothed only by the directions, wearing matted locks and the king of serpents round his neck, carrying a skull and leading the ghosts: that Paśupati holds the unique rank of Lord of the world. O Bhavānī, this is the fruit of his having taken your hand in marriage.
na mokṣasyākāṅkṣā bhavavibhavavāñchāpi ca na mena vijñānāpekṣā śaśimukhi sukhecchāpi na punaḥ |atastvāṃ saṃyāce janani jananaṃ yātu mama vaimṛḍānī rudrāṇī śiva śiva bhavānīti japataḥ ||8||
I do not long for liberation, nor for worldly riches; I seek no learning, moon-faced one, nor even happiness. So I ask you only this, Mother: let my life pass in chanting “Mṛḍānī, Rudrāṇī, Śiva, Śiva, Bhavānī”.
nārādhitāsi vidhinā vividhopacāraiḥkiṃ rukṣacintanaparairna kṛtaṃ vacobhiḥ |śyāme tvameva yadi kiñcana mayyanāthedhatse kṛpāmucitamamba paraṃ tavaiva ||9||
I have not worshipped you by the rules with the many offerings; what harsh things have I not said, my mind set on dry thoughts? If, dark one, you still show any grace to me who has no protector, Mother, that is worthy of you alone.
āpatsu magnaḥ smaraṇaṃ tvadīyaṃkaromi durge karuṇārṇaveśi |naitacchaṭhatvaṃ mama bhāvayethāḥkṣudhātṛṣārtā jananīṃ smaranti ||10||
Sunk in misfortune, I remember you, O Durgā, queen of the ocean of compassion. Do not think it is cunning on my part: children tormented by hunger and thirst remember their mother.
jagadamba vicitramatra kiṃ paripūrṇā karuṇāsti cenmayi |aparādhaparamparāparaṃ na hi mātā samupekṣate sutam ||11||
Mother of the world, what wonder is it if your compassion for me is complete? A mother does not abandon her son, even one given to fault after fault.
matsamaḥ pātakī nāsti pāpaghnī tvatsamā na hi |evaṃ jñātvā mahādevi yathāyogyaṃ tathā kuru ||12||
There is no sinner like me, and no destroyer of sin like you. Knowing this, great Goddess, do as you see fit.
