Verse 1

ततो युद्धपरिश्रान्तं समरे चिन्तया स्थितम् ।रावणं चाग्रतो दृष्ट्वा युद्धाय समुपस्थितम् ॥१॥

tato yuddhapariśrāntaṃ samare cintayā sthitam |rāvaṇaṃ cāgrato dṛṣṭvā yuddhāya samupasthitam ||1||

Then, as Rāma stood weary from battle and lost in thought, with Rāvaṇa before him ready to fight,

Verse 2

दैवतैश्च समागम्य द्रष्टुमभ्यागतो रणम् ।उपागम्याब्रवीद्राममगस्त्यो भगवानृषिः ॥२॥

daivataiśca samāgamya draṣṭumabhyāgato raṇam |upāgamyābravīdrāmamagastyo bhagavānṛṣiḥ ||2||

the revered sage Agastya, who had come with the gods to watch the battle, approached Rāma and said:

Verse 3

राम राम महाबाहो शृणु गुह्यं सनातनम् ।येन सर्वानरीन्वत्स समरे विजयिष्यसि ॥३॥

rāma rāma mahābāho śṛṇu guhyaṃ sanātanam |yena sarvānarīnvatsa samare vijayiṣyasi ||3||

“Rāma, mighty-armed Rāma, hear this eternal secret, by which, my child, you will conquer all your enemies in battle.

Verse 4

आदित्यहृदयं पुण्यं सर्वशत्रुविनाशनम् ।जयावहं जपेन्नित्यमक्षय्यं परमं शिवम् ॥४॥

ādityahṛdayaṃ puṇyaṃ sarvaśatruvināśanam |jayāvahaṃ japennityamakṣayyaṃ paramaṃ śivam ||4||

It is the holy Āditya Hṛdayam, the heart of the Sun, which destroys all enemies and brings victory; one should recite it always. It is imperishable, supreme and auspicious,

Verse 5

सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्यं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम् ।चिन्ताशोकप्रशमनमायुर्वर्धनमुत्तमम् ॥५॥

sarvamaṅgalamāṅgalyaṃ sarvapāpapraṇāśanam |cintāśokapraśamanamāyurvardhanamuttamam ||5||

the most auspicious of all auspicious things, the destroyer of all sins, the calmer of worry and grief, the best increaser of life.

Verse 6

रश्मिमन्तं समुद्यन्तं देवासुरनमस्कृतम् ।पूजयस्व विवस्वन्तं भास्करं भुवनेश्वरम् ॥६॥

raśmimantaṃ samudyantaṃ devāsuranamaskṛtam |pūjayasva vivasvantaṃ bhāskaraṃ bhuvaneśvaram ||6||

Worship the rising Sun, crowned with rays, honoured by gods and asuras alike, Vivasvān, the maker of light, lord of the worlds.

Verse 7

सर्वदेवात्मको ह्येष तेजस्वी रश्मिभावनः ।एष देवासुरगणांल्लोकान् पाति गभस्तिभिः ॥७॥

sarvadevātmako hyeṣa tejasvī raśmibhāvanaḥ |eṣa devāsuragaṇāṃllokān pāti gabhastibhiḥ ||7||

He is the soul of all the gods, radiant, the source of rays; with his rays he protects the gods, the asuras and all the worlds.

Verse 8

एष ब्रह्मा च विष्णुश्च शिवः स्कन्दः प्रजापतिः ।महेन्द्रो धनदः कालो यमः सोमो ह्यपां पतिः ॥८॥

eṣa brahmā ca viṣṇuśca śivaḥ skandaḥ prajāpatiḥ |mahendro dhanadaḥ kālo yamaḥ somo hyapāṃ patiḥ ||8||

He is Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, Skanda and Prajāpati; he is Indra, Kubera, Time, Yama, Soma and Varuṇa, lord of the waters.

Verse 9

पितरो वसवः साध्या ह्यश्विनौ मरुतो मनुः ।वायुर्वह्निः प्रजाप्राण ऋतुकर्ता प्रभाकरः ॥९॥

pitaro vasavaḥ sādhyā hyaśvinau maruto manuḥ |vāyurvahniḥ prajāprāṇa ṛtukartā prabhākaraḥ ||9||

He is the ancestors, the Vasus, the Sādhyas, the Aśvins, the Maruts and Manu; he is wind and fire, the breath of all creatures, the maker of the seasons, the giver of light.

Verse 10

आदित्यः सविता सूर्यः खगः पूषा गभस्तिमान् ।सुवर्णसदृशो भानुर्हिरण्यरेता दिवाकरः ॥१०॥

ādityaḥ savitā sūryaḥ khagaḥ pūṣā gabhastimān |suvarṇasadṛśo bhānurhiraṇyaretā divākaraḥ ||10||

Āditya, Savitā, Sūrya, the one who moves in the sky, the nourisher, the rayed one, golden, the shining one, the golden seed, the maker of day;

Verse 11

हरिदश्वः सहस्रार्चिः सप्तसप्तिर्मरीचिमान् ।तिमिरोन्मथनः शम्भुस्त्वष्टा मार्ताण्ड अंशुमान् ॥११॥

haridaśvaḥ sahasrārciḥ saptasaptirmarīcimān |timironmathanaḥ śambhustvaṣṭā mārtāṇḍa aṃśumān ||11||

drawn by green horses, with a thousand flames and seven steeds, full of light; the destroyer of darkness, the source of happiness, the fashioner, Mārtāṇḍa, the radiant;

Verse 12

हिरण्यगर्भः शिशिरस्तपनो भास्करो रविः ।अग्निगर्भोऽदितेः पुत्रः शङ्खः शिशिरनाशनः ॥१२॥

hiraṇyagarbhaḥ śiśirastapano bhāskaro raviḥ |agnigarbho'diteḥ putraḥ śaṅkhaḥ śiśiranāśanaḥ ||12||

the golden womb, the cool and the burning, the maker of light, Ravi; bearing fire within, son of Aditi, shining like a conch, destroyer of cold;

Verse 13

व्योमनाथस्तमोभेदी ऋग्यजुःसामपारगः ।घनवृष्टिरपां मित्रो विन्ध्यवीथीप्लवङ्गमः ॥१३॥

vyomanāthastamobhedī ṛgyajuḥsāmapāragaḥ |ghanavṛṣṭirapāṃ mitro vindhyavīthīplavaṅgamaḥ ||13||

lord of the sky, piercer of darkness, master of the Ṛg, Yajur and Sāma Vedas; giver of heavy rain, friend of the waters, who leaps across the Vindhya range;

आतपी मण्डली मृत्युः पिङ्गलः सर्वतापनः ।कविर्विश्वो महातेजा रक्तः सर्वभवोद्भवः ॥१४॥

ātapī maṇḍalī mṛtyuḥ piṅgalaḥ sarvatāpanaḥ |kavirviśvo mahātejā raktaḥ sarvabhavodbhavaḥ ||14||

the heat-giver, the orb, death itself, the tawny one who warms all; the seer, the universe, of great splendour, the red one, the source of all that comes to be;

Verse 15

नक्षत्रग्रहताराणामधिपो विश्वभावनः ।तेजसामपि तेजस्वी द्वादशात्मन् नमोऽस्तु ते ॥१५॥

nakṣatragrahatārāṇāmadhipo viśvabhāvanaḥ |tejasāmapi tejasvī dvādaśātman namo'stu te ||15||

lord of the constellations, planets and stars, creator of the universe, the light of all lights: O you of twelve forms, salutation to you.

Verse 16

नमः पूर्वाय गिरये पश्चिमायाद्रये नमः ।ज्योतिर्गणानां पतये दिनाधिपतये नमः ॥१६॥

namaḥ pūrvāya giraye paścimāyādraye namaḥ |jyotirgaṇānāṃ pataye dinādhipataye namaḥ ||16||

Salutation to the eastern mountain and to the western mountain; salutation to the lord of the hosts of lights, the lord of the day.

Verse 17

जयाय जयभद्राय हर्यश्वाय नमो नमः ।नमो नमः सहस्रांशो आदित्याय नमो नमः ॥१७॥

jayāya jayabhadrāya haryaśvāya namo namaḥ |namo namaḥ sahasrāṃśo ādityāya namo namaḥ ||17||

Salutation to the victorious one, to the auspiciousness of victory, to the one drawn by green horses; salutation again and again to the thousand-rayed, to Āditya.

Verse 18

नम उग्राय वीराय सारङ्गाय नमो नमः ।नमः पद्मप्रबोधाय मार्ताण्डाय नमो नमः ॥१८॥

nama ugrāya vīrāya sāraṅgāya namo namaḥ |namaḥ padmaprabodhāya mārtāṇḍāya namo namaḥ ||18||

Salutation to the fierce one, the hero, the swift; salutation to the one who opens the lotus, to Mārtāṇḍa.

Verse 19

ब्रह्मेशानाच्युतेशाय सूर्यायादित्यवर्चसे ।भास्वते सर्वभक्षाय रौद्राय वपुषे नमः ॥१९॥

brahmeśānācyuteśāya sūryāyādityavarcase |bhāsvate sarvabhakṣāya raudrāya vapuṣe namaḥ ||19||

Salutation to the lord of Brahmā, Śiva and Viṣṇu, to Sūrya with the splendour of Āditya, the shining one who consumes all, whose form is fierce.

Verse 20

तमोघ्नाय हिमघ्नाय शत्रुघ्नायामितात्मने ।कृतघ्नघ्नाय देवाय ज्योतिषां पतये नमः ॥२०॥

tamoghnāya himaghnāya śatrughnāyāmitātmane |kṛtaghnaghnāya devāya jyotiṣāṃ pataye namaḥ ||20||

Salutation to the destroyer of darkness, of cold and of enemies, of boundless being; to the god who destroys the ungrateful, the lord of all lights.

Verse 21

तप्तचामीकराभाय वह्नये विश्वकर्मणे ।नमस्तमोऽभिनिघ्नाय रुचये लोकसाक्षिणे ॥२१॥

taptacāmīkarābhāya vahnaye viśvakarmaṇe |namastamo'bhinighnāya rucaye lokasākṣiṇe ||21||

Salutation to the one shining like molten gold, to the fire, the maker of all; to the slayer of darkness, the radiance, the witness of the world.

Verse 22

नाशयत्येष वै भूतं तदेव सृजति प्रभुः ।पायत्येष तपत्येष वर्षत्येष गभस्तिभिः ॥२२॥

nāśayatyeṣa vai bhūtaṃ tadeva sṛjati prabhuḥ |pāyatyeṣa tapatyeṣa varṣatyeṣa gabhastibhiḥ ||22||

This Lord destroys all beings and creates them again; with his rays he dries up, he heats and he sends the rain.

Verse 23

एष सुप्तेषु जागर्ति भूतेषु परिनिष्ठितः ।एष एवाग्निहोत्रं च फलं चैवाग्निहोत्रिणाम् ॥२३॥

eṣa supteṣu jāgarti bhūteṣu pariniṣṭhitaḥ |eṣa evāgnihotraṃ ca phalaṃ caivāgnihotriṇām ||23||

Dwelling in all beings, he stays awake while they sleep; he is the fire offering and the fruit gained by those who offer it.

Verse 24

वेदाश्च क्रतवश्चैव क्रतूनां फलमेव च ।यानि कृत्यानि लोकेषु सर्व एष रविः प्रभुः ॥२४॥

vedāśca kratavaścaiva kratūnāṃ phalameva ca |yāni kṛtyāni lokeṣu sarva eṣa raviḥ prabhuḥ ||24||

He is the Vedas, the sacrifices and the fruit of the sacrifices; whatever acts are done in the worlds, the Lord Ravi is all of them.

Verse 25

एनमापत्सु कृच्छ्रेषु कान्तारेषु भयेषु च ।कीर्तयन् पुरुषः कश्चिन्नावसीदति राघव ॥२५॥

enamāpatsu kṛcchreṣu kāntāreṣu bhayeṣu ca |kīrtayan puruṣaḥ kaścinnāvasīdati rāghava ||25||

O Rāghava, whoever praises him in calamity, in hardship, in the wilderness and in danger does not come to grief.

Verse 26

पूजयस्वैनमेकाग्रो देवदेवं जगत्पतिम् ।एतत्त्रिगुणितं जप्त्वा युद्धेषु विजयिष्यसि ॥२६॥

pūjayasvainamekāgro devadevaṃ jagatpatim |etattriguṇitaṃ japtvā yuddheṣu vijayiṣyasi ||26||

Worship him with a one-pointed mind, the God of gods, lord of the universe; reciting this three times, you will be victorious in battle.

Verse 27

अस्मिन्क्षणे महाबाहो रावणं त्वं वधिष्यसि ।एवमुक्त्वा तदागस्त्यो जगाम च यथागतम् ॥२७॥

asminkṣaṇe mahābāho rāvaṇaṃ tvaṃ vadhiṣyasi |evamuktvā tadāgastyo jagāma ca yathāgatam ||27||

This very moment, mighty-armed one, you will slay Rāvaṇa.” Having said this, Agastya went back the way he had come.

Verse 28

एतच्छ्रुत्वा महातेजा नष्टशोकोऽभवत्तदा ।धारयामास सुप्रीतो राघवः प्रयतात्मवान् ॥२८॥

etacchrutvā mahātejā naṣṭaśoko'bhavattadā |dhārayāmāsa suprīto rāghavaḥ prayatātmavān ||28||

Hearing this, the radiant Rāghava was freed from sorrow; delighted and self-controlled, he took the hymn to heart.

Verse 29

आदित्यं प्रेक्ष्य जप्त्वा तु परं हर्षमवाप्तवान् ।त्रिराचम्य शुचिर्भूत्वा धनुरादाय वीर्यवान् ॥२९॥

ādityaṃ prekṣya japtvā tu paraṃ harṣamavāptavān |trirācamya śucirbhūtvā dhanurādāya vīryavān ||29||

Gazing at the Sun and reciting it, he was filled with great joy; purified by sipping water three times, the valiant one took up his bow.

Verse 30

रावणं प्रेक्ष्य हृष्टात्मा युद्धाय समुपागमत् ।सर्वयत्नेन महता वधे तस्य धृतोऽभवत् ॥३०॥

rāvaṇaṃ prekṣya hṛṣṭātmā yuddhāya samupāgamat |sarvayatnena mahatā vadhe tasya dhṛto'bhavat ||30||

Seeing Rāvaṇa, he advanced to battle with a joyful heart, resolved with every effort to slay him.

Verse 31

अथ रविरवदन्निरीक्ष्य रामंमुदितमनाः परमं प्रहृष्यमाणः ।निशिचरपतिसङ्क्षयं विदित्वासुरगणमध्यगतो वचस्त्वरेति ॥३१॥

atha raviravadannirīkṣya rāmaṃmuditamanāḥ paramaṃ prahṛṣyamāṇaḥ |niśicarapatisaṅkṣayaṃ viditvāsuragaṇamadhyagato vacastvareti ||31||

Then the Sun, standing among the gods, looked at Rāma and, rejoicing greatly as he knew the end of the lord of the night-wanderers was near, said: “Make haste.”
