śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtistotram

Ādi Śaṅkarācārya's ten verses to Śiva as Dakṣiṇāmūrti, the silent teacher, which set out the whole of Advaita Vedānta in a hymn.

1 / 11

Verse Dhyāna

maunavyākhyāprakaṭitaparabrahmatattvaṃ yuvānaṃvarṣiṣṭhānte vasadṛṣigaṇairāvṛtaṃ brahmaniṣṭhaiḥ |ācāryendraṃ karakalitacinmudramānandamūrtiṃsvātmārāmaṃ muditavadanaṃ dakṣiṇāmūrtimīḍe ||

I praise Dakṣiṇāmūrti, the youthful teacher who reveals the truth of the supreme Brahman through silence, surrounded by aged sages established in Brahman; chief of teachers, his hand in the cin-mudrā, bliss embodied, delighting in the Self, his face full of joy.

Verse 1

viśvaṃ darpaṇadṛśyamānanagarītulyaṃ nijāntargataṃpaśyannātmani māyayā bahirivodbhūtaṃ yathā nidrayā |yaḥ sākṣātkurute prabodhasamaye svātmānamevādvayaṃtasmai śrīgurumūrtaye nama idaṃ śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtaye ||1||

He sees the universe, which lies within himself like a city seen in a mirror, as if it had arisen outside through māyā, as in a dream; and on waking he realises it as his own non-dual Self. To him, the guru in the form of Dakṣiṇāmūrti, this salutation.

Verse 2

bījasyāntarivāṅkuro jagadidaṃ prāṅnirvikalpaṃ punaḥmāyākalpitadeśakālakalanāvaicitryacitrīkṛtam |māyāvīva vijṛmbhayatyapi mahāyogīva yaḥ svecchayātasmai śrīgurumūrtaye nama idaṃ śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtaye ||2||

Like the sprout within a seed, this world was first undifferentiated; then, coloured by the variety of space and time projected by māyā, it is unfolded at will as if by a magician or a great yogi. To him, the guru Dakṣiṇāmūrti, this salutation.

Verse 3

yasyaiva sphuraṇaṃ sadātmakamasatkalpārthagaṃ bhāsatesākṣāttattvamasīti vedavacasā yo bodhayatyāśritān |yatsākṣātkaraṇādbhavenna punarāvṛttirbhavāmbhonidhautasmai śrīgurumūrtaye nama idaṃ śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtaye ||3||

His shining alone, which is pure existence, appears in the things imagined as unreal; he awakens those who come to him with the Vedic words “That thou art”; and by realising him there is no return to the ocean of birth. To him, this salutation.

Verse 4

nānācchidraghaṭodarasthitamahādīpaprabhābhāsvaraṃjñānaṃ yasya tu cakṣurādikaraṇadvārā bahiḥ spandate |jānāmīti tameva bhāntamanubhātyetatsamastaṃ jagattasmai śrīgurumūrtaye nama idaṃ śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtaye ||4||

His knowledge, like the light of a great lamp inside a pot pierced with many holes, streams outward through the eyes and the other senses; the whole world shines after him alone as he shines, saying “I know”. To him, this salutation.

Verse 5

dehaṃ prāṇamapīndriyāṇyapi calāṃ buddhiṃ ca śūnyaṃ viduḥstrībālāndhajaḍopamāstvahamiti bhrāntā bhṛśaṃ vādinaḥ |māyāśaktivilāsakalpitamahāvyāmohasaṃhāriṇetasmai śrīgurumūrtaye nama idaṃ śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtaye ||5||

Those who argue that the body, the breath, the senses, the restless intellect or the void is the “I” are deeply deluded, like women, children, the blind and the dull. To him who destroys this great delusion created by the play of māyā, this salutation.

Verse 6

rāhugrastadivākarendusadṛśo māyāsamācchādanātsanmātraḥ karaṇopasaṃharaṇato yo'bhūtsuṣuptaḥ pumān |prāgasvāpsamiti prabodhasamaye yaḥ pratyabhijñāyatetasmai śrīgurumūrtaye nama idaṃ śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtaye ||6||

Like the sun or moon eclipsed by Rāhu, the person who, covered by māyā, remains as pure being in deep sleep when the senses are withdrawn, recognises on waking “I slept before”. To him, this salutation.

Verse 7

bālyādiṣvapi jāgradādiṣu tathā sarvāsvavasthāsvapivyāvṛttāsvanuvartamānamahamityantaḥ sphurantaṃ sadā |svātmānaṃ prakaṭīkaroti bhajatāṃ yo mudrayā bhadrayātasmai śrīgurumūrtaye nama idaṃ śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtaye ||7||

Through childhood and the other stages, through waking and the other states, in all conditions the Self shines within as “I”, continuous through all that changes. To him who reveals this Self to his devotees with the auspicious cin-mudrā, this salutation.

Verse 8

viśvaṃ paśyati kāryakāraṇatayā svasvāmisambandhataḥśiṣyācāryatayā tathaiva pitṛputrādyātmanā bhedataḥ |svapne jāgrati vā ya eṣa puruṣo māyāparibhrāmitaḥtasmai śrīgurumūrtaye nama idaṃ śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtaye ||8||

The person deluded by māyā, in dream or waking, sees the world as divided into cause and effect, owner and owned, disciple and teacher, father and son. To him, this salutation.

Verse 9

bhūrambhāṃsyanalo'nilo'mbaramaharnātho himāṃśuḥ pumānityābhāti carācarātmakamidaṃ yasyaiva mūrtyaṣṭakam |nānyatkiñcana vidyate vimṛśatāṃ yasmātparasmādvibhoḥtasmai śrīgurumūrtaye nama idaṃ śrīdakṣiṇāmūrtaye ||9||

Earth, water, fire, air, space, the sun, the moon and the individual: this moving and unmoving world appears as his eightfold form, and for those who reflect, nothing exists apart from that supreme, all-pervading Lord. To him, this salutation.

Verse 10

sarvātmatvamiti sphuṭīkṛtamidaṃ yasmādamuṣmin stavetenāsya śravaṇāttadarthamananāddhyānācca saṅkīrtanāt |sarvātmatvamahāvibhūtisahitaṃ syādīśvaratvaṃ svataḥsiddhyettatpunaraṣṭadhā pariṇataṃ caiśvaryamavyāhatam ||10||

Because this hymn makes clear that the Self is all, by hearing it, reflecting on its meaning, meditating on it and reciting it, one gains lordship with the great glory of being the Self of all, and unobstructed mastery in its eightfold form.
